The BBC is clearly so confident in its stab at adapting Sir Philip Pullman's acclaimed fantasy novels known collectively as the His Dark Materials trilogy that it has already ordered a second series before the first has been broadcast. We don't even have a date for it yet, but we do at least have a teaser. Check it out...

National Treasure's Jack Thorne adapted the books, comprising Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Materials' narrative follows the adventures of Lyra Belacqua (Logan's Dafne Keen) and Will Parry as they explore parallel universes inhabited by witches, armoured bears, and daemons, literal spirit animals for some characters. They learn dark truths about how the world – worlds, even – works.

The cast, as the teaser makes clear, also includes James McAvoy as the ruthless Lord Asriel, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, Lyra's mother, Clarke Peters as college head Dr. Carne and Hamilton/Mary Poppins Returns man Lin-Manuel Miranda as pilot and adventurer Lee Scoresby.

The series should be on screens sometime this year, with US audiences getting their chance to watch thanks to the Beeb's deal with HBO.
