Eyebrows were raised a few days ago when John Carpenter revealed that director David Gordon Green and frequent collaborator Danny McBride would be working on a new Halloween film. Now McBride has shed some light on their plans.
The new movie will not, as some had suspected, be yet another attempt to reboot the franchise. Instead, this take on Michael Myers will have a specific slot within the mythology. "It's not a remake," McBride tells Cinema Blend. "It's actually gonna continue the story of Michael Myers in a really grounded way. And for our mythology, we're focusing mainly in the first two movies and what that sets up and then where the story can go from there."
Carpenter famously had little to do with the movies beyond the third outing. But he's fully involved in this new one, so whatever Green and McBride have in mind clearly snagged his interest. The actor/writer is saying nothing yet about when the movie might be set, but if you were thinking it might somehow be a comedy based on the franchise, think again. "We're definitely going to do a straight-up horror," assures McBride. "Halloween has always been one of my favorite movies of all time. There's a simplicity and an efficiency to that first one that I think allows the movies just to be scary as hell. And so Green and I, our approach is to get back to that."
This latest instalment for the horror will be stalking cinemas in October 2018. As an actor, McBride will next pop up in Alien: Covenant, due on 19 May this year.
