Danny Glover’s getting into the directing game. And he’s picked an ambitious, action-packed epic to start with.
He’ll wave the megaphone for Toussaint, which is based on the 1791-1804 slave uprising in Haiti, one of history’s few successful such attempts.
Wesley Snipes will star as Toussaint L’Ouverture, who led his fellow slaves to victory against the French, Spanish and British armies and set up the first independent black republic, and nabbing himself the role of president. But his story doesn’t end well – he was captured by the French a year later and died in prison. His legacy, however, lived on.
Angela Basset’s also starring, while Joslyn Barnes and Vijay Balakrishnan penned the script Glover will start shooting later thisn year in South Africa.
