Even before The Lego Movie hit it big and spawned a universe, rival toy item Playmobil was angling to hit screens with a movie in development. The pace has picked up since the Lego success, and now the movie is announcing its main cast. Daniel Radcliffe, Anya Taylor-Joy, Adam Lambert, Meghan Trainor, Gabriel Bateman and Jim Gaffigan are all aboard.
With Disney veteran Lino DiSalvo jumping into the non-giant studio animated world to direct, this will be a blend of live-action and CG characters, and we'll follow the adventures of siblings Charlie (Bateman) and Marla (Taylor-Joy). When the former unexpectedly disappears into the animated universe of Playmobil, Marla must go on a quest to bring him home. During her adventures she teams up with some unlikely new friends, including smooth-talking food truck driver Del (Gaffigan), charismatic secret agent Rex Dasher (Radcliffe), a wholehearted misfit robot and an extravagant fairy-godmother (Trainor). Lambert will voice the character of villain Emperor Maximus. As you might expect when people more known for singing than acting are added to a film, Trainor and Lambert will both be belting out original songs for the soundtrack.
Blaise Hemingway, Greg Erb and Jason Oremland wrote the script, and the movie will be out next year in the UK via Studiocanal. American audiences will have to wait and see who picks up the film after the loss of planned distributor Open Road.
