Danai Gurira To Leave The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead – Season 9 Episode 7

As if the survivors on The Walking Dead didn't have enough to deal with, their number is being reduced not by zombie attrition or conflicts with other humans, but by contract negotiations and actors deciding to pursue other projects. And the latest star is among the biggest the show still has – Danai Gurira will be leaving the show after Season 10.

Gurira, who plays sword-slinging badass Michonne, has been a key part of the show since Season 3, and saw her career take off due to the reaction to the character. These days, she's in more demand for the likes of Black Panther (where she played Okoye, reprising the role for Avengers: Infinity War) and Godzilla Vs. Kong, rumoured as one of the humans avoiding being squished by the giant beasts' battle.

Add to that her burgeoning playwriting career, where she has been winning awards and acclaim. The exact details of how Gurira will be written out are naturally a secret right now, though The Hollywood Reporter has learned that she'll appear in a handful of episodes in Season 10 (due to start later this year) and is then a possibility for the three Walking Dead spin-off TV movies set to star Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, who left the main show earlier in the current season.

This would mark another big loss for the show, which has seen its ratings slip in recent seasons.
