We're into guild territory this awards season, with the Producers Guild already announcing its nominees. Thursday it was the turn of the Directors Guild of America, whose awards have traditionally been a rough pointer to Best Director at the Oscars. Among the names this year? La La Land's Damien Chazelle, Manchester By The Sea's Kenneth Lonergan and Arrival's Denis Villeneuve.
The other people listed for the main Feature Film category are the deserving likes of Moonlight's Barry Jenkins, and Lion's Garth Davis. It promises to be an especially tough race this year, if one disappoingtingly short of women yet again.
And yet it's an interesting one too, as Davis features on not one but two lists. The guild's First Time Director Award, which was launched last year, also features the Lion man among its line-up. That also includes The Edge Of Seventeen's Kelly Fremon Craig, Deadpool's Tim Miller, The Birth Of A Nation's Nate Parker (making a rare appearance on an awards list after his controversial past issues appeared to scupper his chances) and 10 Cloverfield Lane's Dan Trachtenberg.
We'll have to wait until 4 February to learn who won.
