Genndy Tartakovsky, best known for directing the Samurai Jack and the Clone Wars cartoons, has been hired to direct Power Of The Crystal, a sequel to The Dark Crystal.

The film will be co-produced by The Jim Henson Company and Tartakovsky’s own Orphanage Animation Studios. Scripted by Annette Duffy and David Odell, the plot is set hundreds of years after the original and follows a mysterious girl made of fire who steals a shard of the crystal in hopes of reigniting the dying sun.

Tartakovsky plans to use a Sin-City-meets-the-Muppets technique (now there's a mental image), with puppet characters performing before a green screen and backgrounds added in later.
