As Sony attempts to relight the flame of the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo films via new entry The Girl In The Spider's Web, the studio and director Fede Alvarez are zeroing in on who they want to inherit the mantle of hacker Lisbeth Salander. The current top choice is The Crown's Claire Foy, who is now in early talks.

With the team seemingly abandoning (or at least tabling) the idea of adapting the two direct follow-ups The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, which would both adapt writer Stieg Larsson's modern noir work, the focus is now on effectively rebooting the movie series via a follow-up that wasn't actually written by the late novelist.

Penned instead by David Lagercrantz with continuity to both the crime writer’s style and his characters in mind, The Girl In The Spider’s Web sends Dragon Tattoo’s odd-couple pairing of hacker Lisbeth Salander and seasoned journo Mikael Blomkvist on new misadventures.

This time they’re faced with a ruthless web of espionage, cybercriminals and high-level villainy, plus the usual serious threats. Alvarez has worked on the latest draft with Jay Basu.

Foy, who according to The Hollywood Reporter has narrowly pipped Rogue One's Felicity Jones for the part, is now going to be juggling her schedule to see if she can make shooting dates work. The plan is to have the film hitting cinemas in October 2018.
