Rob Zombie said that he only agreed to remake Halloween because he couldn't bear to think of it being done by anyone else. That's the only possible reason we can think of to explain the news from The Hollywood Reporter that David Cronenberg is set to direct and probably write a new version of The Fly.
It must be a ways off, since Cronenberg is currently working on Don Delillo's Cosmopolis and the Robert Ludlum thriller The Matarese Circle. But THR is very clear that the film is in development at Fox, and suggests the evolution in special effects over the last 20 years as the possible reason.

We went from man-with-a-fly's-head-on (not to mention fly-with-a-man's-head-on - "help meeee!") to Brundlefly in a similar span of time that separates Cronenberg's remake and today. But can another new version really be that different again? And can anyone replace Jeff Goldblum in that role?
The Fly obviously remains a project close to Cronenberg's heart: he's already been involved in turning it into an opera{
