After the surprises of the Golden Globes last week, awards season continues with the Critics’ Choice ceremony – and this winners’ list has fewer out-there choices (notably, nothing for Bohemian Rhapsody), and reflects a potentially close Oscar race ahead. The top prizes – Best Picture and Best Director – went to Roma, which also nabbed Best Foreign-Language Film and Best Cinematography for director Alfonso Cuarón. Christian Bale edged ahead of Bradley Cooper to win Best Actor – in both the Best Actor, and Best Actor In A Comedy categories, no less – for his turn as Dick Cheney in Vice. As for the actress categories, it sets up a neck-and-neck dash for the Oscar – Glenn Close and Lady Gaga were directly tied in the main category, while Olivia Colman won Best Actress In A Comedy. The Favourite also won Best Acting Ensemble, nicely reflecting the evenly-weighted roles of its central trio.
Elsewhere, genre films received recognition too – Mission: Impossible – Fallout nabbed Best Action Movie (presumably while dangling over the side of a cliff), Crazy Rich Asians bagged Best Comedy, A Quiet Place crept up to win Best Sci-Fi / Horror, and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse thwipped its way to Best Animated Feature. Black Panther also received Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.
