While the direct Crazy Rich Asians sequel — adapted from follow-up novel China Rich Girlfriend – is still slowly making its way through development, another project based on the same book is now joining it in the planning stages. Writer Jason Kim is aboard to write a film focusing on the rekindled romance between Astrid Young Teo (Gemma Chan) and Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr).
The storyline, as teased at the end of 2018's Crazy Rich Asians, follows on from the split between Astrid and her husband Michael (Pierre Png) after his affair.
Astrid reconnects with Charlie at her cousin Nick's (Henry Golding) party celebrating his engagement to Rachel (Constance Wu). Charlie was her first love and they got engaged, but Astrid’s parents broke them up as they didn’t see Charlie as a suitable husband.
According to Deadline, Kim came in with an idea for the Astrid and Charlie spin-off that Warner Bros. liked. Whether it beats the China Rich Girlfriend adaptation to screens is another question.
Kim is a producer on Michelle Zauner's Crying In H Mart, has TV projects in development and is preparing for his original musical KPOP – which focuses on Korean culture and the popularity of the country's music.
