After all the fuss and bother, David Cronenberg's controversial Crash (to give it its full title) was a flop at the UK box office. Fewer than 150,000 people saw it in its first eight weeks of release, according to official industry figures. The film's ban from the West End by Westminster Council seriously damaged its chances of making a decent buck, say insiders. Or was it the fact that, despite all the hoo-ha, people simply weren't interested in automobile erotica?
