Those lucky beans over at Moviefone have nabbed a first look at the teaser trailer for 2012, the latest movie from Hollywood’s favourite doomsayer, Roland Emmerich.
Sadly it hasn’t got anything to do with the forthcoming London Olympics: rather the numerical title is a reference to the belief in some spiritual quarters that a ‘great transformation’ will occur – which could mean sunshine and happiness, or could mean an apocalypse. Guess which one Roland has gone for…?
Yes, not content with having the world almost wiped out by aliens, giant lizards or weather, this time he's gone for... well, we won't spoil it just yet. The teaser shows a Tibetan monk running uphill to sound an alarm, which appears to be all in vain as a tidal wave spills over the Himalayas towards him (and the Himalayas are, like, big). Meanwhile there are familiar beats of black with text telling us that the governments of the world aren’t even going to try saving the population on this one.
There’s no sign of any of the impressive main cast yet – John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson, Danny Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Oliver Platt are all onboard – but surely as the end of the world is nigh, they’ll be turning up in the full trailer early next year. 2012, ironically, is out on July 10, 2009.
