Sylvester Stallone's police drama Cop Land, for which he piled on the pounds and eschewed his usual $20 million fee, debuted at number one in the US weekend box office chart. The film, about small-town police corruption, took around $13 million, setting a new opening weekend record for a Miramax film. Terrorist thriller Air Force One held steady at number two, bumping its overall gross up to $130.6 million, while Mel Gibson's Conspiracy Theory dropped to the third position, with takings of $47 million.
