Dr Seuss, were he still alive, would be grinning from ear to ear this morning as the second of his big-budget book adaptations scored a direct hit on the US box office. The Cat in the Hat made $40.1 million over the weekend, more than doubling that gained by Halle Berry's spooky thriller, Gothika. Mike Myers is the eponymous moggie in the film, which brings Seuss' best-loved character to the screen in all his insane glory. Appearing to entertain (read: utterly disrupt the lives of) two bored children, the Cat causes mayhem in the Walden household and wreaks the kind of wholesale havok that all parents who leave their kids unattended have nightmares about. It's unlikely to topple Jim Carrey's The Grinch from its throne as top Seuss by-product but The Cat may have more up its furry sleeve than anyone had expected.
