The Eddie Murphy comeback continues – after last year brought Dolemite Is My Name and his long-awaited return to SNL, we’re now mere months away from Coming 2 America, the long-mooted sequel to his classic 1988 comedy. The film finds Murphy returning as Akeem – though this time he’s not a prince, but the king of Zamunda. And upon learning he’s got a son somewhere in the USA, he’s jetting back off to America with Arsenio Hall’s Semmi in tow. Take a look at the film’s first trailer here:
Coming 2 America finds Murphy teaming back with up with director Craig Brewer, who helmed Dolemite – and the pair has assembled a huge cast for this one. As well as Murphy and Hall, the film stars the likes of Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, James Earl Jones, Wesley Snipes, Jermaine Fowler, Shari Headley, and Teyana Taylor. And, of course, Murphy and Hall are playing multiple roles across the movie – check out the second half of the trailer teasing them in various guises, including those barbershop characters. The film is penned by Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield, who wrote the first film – and the legendary Ruth E. Carter is behind those epic costumes.
Coming 2 America comes to Amazon Prime Video on 5 March next year – here’s hoping it lives up to the original, and to Murphy’s recent output.
