It's fair to say that the 1997 film adaptation of Todd McFarlane's Spawn did not exactly cover itself in glory. Since then, animated adventures have kept the flame alive, but there has always been talk of a live-action re-invention. Now McFarlane himself has announced a new, R-rated film to be produced with the Blumhouse team. You can find that video here.
Though it's hard to imagine the effects needed to bring the character to life being possible with the sort of low budgets that Blumhouse has had success with, digital technology has come a long way, and McFarlane is pitching this more as a horror thriller than a superhero movie, so expect it to stay low-key.
We'll see if this finally drags Spawn out of development hell, but McFarlane certainly seems excited by this latest deal. And Blumhouse has had great success with its movies recently, so they'll looking to expand a little...
