We were a little surprised to see Screen Gems and Constantin Film starting development of a prequel to their Lilly Collins/Jamie Campbell-Bower-starring adaptation of The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones last month. It’s less surprising to learn that Collins and Campbell-Bower are now on for the sequel, **City Of Ashes{ =nofollow}.

The first film doesn’t even hit cinemas until August, but the companies behind it are already touting the second movie based on Cassandra Clare’s novels, with Harald Zwart back in the director’s chair and Jessica Postigo Paquette returning to write the script once again.

While Bones will introduce young Clary Fray (Collins) and her discovery that she’s a half-angel demon hunter who can perceive things us mundanes cannot, City Of Ashes will continue her journey into this new world, and learning how to use her powers. Of course, things also get more complicated…

**City Of Bones **arrives on August 23. Check out the first trailer at the bottom of the page.

In related Young Adult adaptation sequel news, Summit Entertainment has similarly confident feelings where dystopian sci-fi pic Divergent is concerned. With the movie still shooting in Chicago, the company is now putting Jane Got A Gun writer Brian Duffield on the job of adapting follow up tome Insurgent.

As the first book chronicles Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) and the strange society she grows up in, the second will (spoiler alert!) see her situation devolve into war between the various factions that represent humanity in Veronica Roth’s books.

Neil Burger is currently working on the first movie from Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor’s script, aiming for a March 21 release date over here next year. Duffield will kick off writing the sequel now, hoping that his latest gig will be less troubled than **Jane
