We’ve made no secret of our appreciation for underserved character actor Colin Salmon, a man we’ve praised in the past as a potential Bond. He’s not playing an action man agent in his next gig, but he will be appearing alongside one – with hopes that he’ll also get his moment to shine – given he’s nabbed a role in 24: Live Another Day.

The new “event series” (the fancy name for a 12-episode miniseries) spins off from the TV drama starring Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), the world’s most put-upon, time-crunched warrior in the fight against global terrorism. This time, it’s four years since the series ended, with Jack a fugitive still involved in fighting bad guys. As you’ll have learned from previous reports and that explosive Super Bowl trailer, he’ll be dealing with all of that in good old London town.

Salmon, according to Deadline, is set to play General Coburn, an intelligent and fiercely loyal military man who factors into the plot in a way that has yet to be revealed. He joins a swelling cast that includes 24 veterans Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kim Raver and William Devane, plus newcomers to the show John Boyega, Giles Matthey, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Michael Wincott, Yvonne Strahovski and Judy Davis. Oh, and Stephen Fry as the Prime Minister.

The new episodes are scheduled to air from May 5 in the US, but there’s no indication of a UK date just yet.
