If there’s anyone you’d trust to pull a fast one on one of history’s greatest monsters, it’s the ever-reliable Colin Firth – so if you’ve ever wanted to see him try and best Hitler, take a look at the brand new Operation Mincemeat trailer. If the title makes it sound like some kind of grindhouse horror movie, it’s actually a World War II drama named after the real-life operation in which British intelligence officers tried to thwart the Nazis by planting a dead body in enemy waters with a satchel full of fake papers – the sort of hare-brained scheme so mad, it might actually work. Check out the trailer here:

Firth plays Ewen Montagu who along with Matthew Macfadyen’s Charles Cholmondeley cooked up the scheme – with help from Penelope Wilton’s Hester Leggett, Johnny Flynn’s Ian Fleming (yes, that Ian Fleming), and Kelly Macdonald’s Jean Leslie. But Jason Isaacs’ John Godfrey is sceptical about the scheme, Winston Churchill (played by Simon Russell Beale) expects results, and there’s no guarantee the deception will be effective. That brilliant cast has been wrangled by director John Madden – previously behind Shakespeare In Love, Miss Sloane, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films – working from a screenplay by Michelle Ashford.

Operation Mincemeat comes to UK cinemas in January 2022 – and keep ‘em peeled on empireonline.com for a trailer breakdown with Madden coming very soon.
