BFI chair Anthony Minghella will be sounding out a loud 'hip-hip hooray' this morning as his film, Cold Mountain, emerged with a whopping 13 BAFTA nominations. The list was announced this morning by presenter Stephen Fry as journalists gathered to hear the list of this year's hopefuls with pens poised and breath baited. The tension was broken ever so slightly by the pealing ringtone of Fry's mobile phone but, one embarrassed apology later, the names were revealed in full. Coming round the Mountain - oh come on, it's Monday - in second place was Return of the King, with 12 nominations, followed by Girl with a Pearl Earring with 10 and both Master and Commander and Lost in Translation: each with eight. Perhaps surprisingly, Kill Bill jumped into the fray with sword a-swinging, taking five nominations for its very own. In an unusual move for the usually decisive institution, BAFTA nominated two performers for double roles this year. Scarlett Johansson received a nod for her roles in both Girl with a Pearl Earring and Lost in Translation while Sean Penn's double hit was for both 21 Grams and Mystic River. Unusual to be sure but certainly not the first time votes have been combined, both Miranda Richardson and Anthony Hopkins have been nominated for two roles in previous years. The presence of Bill Murray and Johnny Depp in the Best Actor category were welcome (though not unexpected), but Uma Thurman cropping up in Best Actress was, although not forseen, no less welcome. Given his credentials, Richard Curtis was conspicuous by his absence in both directing and writing categories. 'I can't, apart from my own film, see any huge omissions in the list.' said Love Actually's producer Duncan Kenworthy who as Chair of the BAFTA's Film Committee attended the press conference. Given last year's star-studded ceremony, BAFTA are clearly hoping for another bumper year of paparazzi fodder. Asked whether the revised date for The Oscars would affect this, Kenworthy was optimistic. 'Our concern was that all of the stars might be promoting their movies and they might not have time to come to London, that hasn't happened.' The BAFTAs will kick off on Sunday 15 February. Empire Online will be there as usual so don't forget to check back on the night for our full report. The Full List of Nominees BEST FILM
