CODA Oscar Chances Surge After Winning Producers Guild And Writers Guild Awards

CODA

With less than a week to go until the 2022 Oscars, the race for those little gold statues is really hotting up – and the results at this year’s Producers Guild Awards and Writers Guild Awards might have just changed the game. These more industry-focused ceremonies tend to be a significant indicator for the Academy Awards – and while The Power Of The Dog had emerged as a frontrunner after the BAFTAs, the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the Golden Globes, the PGA and WGA results suggest a possible shake-up for Jane Campion’s Western.

Sian Heder’s CODA, about a girl who grows up the only hearing member of her otherwise-deaf family and wants to pursue music at college, won major prizes at both ceremonies – picking up the main feature film prize at the Producers Guild Awards, and bagging Adapted Screenplay (it’s adapted from 2014 French film La Family Bélier) at the Writers Guild Awards. In short, its Oscar chances just took a major leap.

Elsewhere, at the Producers Guild Awards, Encanto bagged the animated movie prize, with Summer Of Soul winning in the documentary category – and there were TV wins for Succession (drama series), Ted Lasso (comedy series), Mare Of Easttown (limited series), and The Beatles: Get Back (non-fiction television). The Writers Guild Award saw Adam McKay’s satire Don’t Look Up win Original Screenplay, and in the TV categories there was more love for Succession (drama series) and Mare Of Easttown (original long form), plus two awards for Hacks (comedy series, new series).

Read the full list of winners from both awards ceremonies below – and start stockpiling coffee and snacks for the Oscars ahead of this Sunday.
