Kevin Spacey, Mike Myers and Chris Tucker have all been considered for the role of Inspector Clouseau in an updated continuation of the Pink Panther franchise. However, after the studio balked at the $20 million Myers expected and (very wisely) came to their senses after having Tucker read for the role, Steve Martin has been officially offered the part. Made famous by Peter Sellers in the 1964 film, Inspector Clouseau bumbled from one lead to another in a bid to catch an infamous jewel thief who was right under his nose. Sellers was so popular in the role that he went on to reprise it in numerous sequels before the franchise carried on without him, ending in 1993 with Son of The Pink Panther, which starred Roberto Benigni as Clouseau's equally inept son. Birth of The Pink Panther would be a prequel film featuring Martin as the original inspector, assigned to solve the murder of a football coach while investigating the disappearance of the legendary Pink Panther diamond - a gem that's clearly far more trouble than it's worth. The deal's not signed yet, however, as Martin is dubious about taking on such a famous and well-established character. The paycheque would be pretty hefty though and, after this year's Oscar-hosting performance, the man should probably take what he's offered.
