As The Conjuring's creepy Annabelle has proved in recent years, weird kids’ dolls are still scary. And now, fresh from his cameo in Ready Player One, it sounds like the iconic killer-doll Chucky will be making a cinematic comeback in the form of a Child’s Play reboot. According to Collider, the horror franchise is getting a retooling at MGM from the producers behind It, David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith.
The report claims that the script, written by Kung Fury 2’s Tyler Burton Smith, will follow a group of teenagers battling a ‘technologically-advanced’ doll, with up-and-coming Norwegian director Lars Klevberg set to direct. For series purists, there are causes for concern here — the reboot would mark the first Chucky film not to be written by series creator Don Mancini, who also directed later instalments Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky.
While it sounds like Mancini isn’t directly involved here (and there’s no word on whether Brad Dourif will voice the doll, as he has in every previous film), the reboot would bring the horror icon back to to the big screen — the last two Chucky films have gone straight to home release. MGM was behind the original 1988 Child’s Play, while all sequels were released by Universal — something which could point towards Mancini’s lack of involvement in the MGM reboot.
