Blimey – they’re not hanging around on the Man of Steel casting front. Now that many of the big main roles are filled on Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder’s new Superman project, the producer and director have begun to track down some of the other characters, with Christopher Meloni now in negotiations for an unspecified part.

Meloni, who for years has been best known for his work on US cop drama Law & Order: SVU, left the series last month after 12 seasons. Now it would seem he’s focusing on his film career.

But just who is he playing? After word on his casting broke, the speculation gravitated towards either Daily Planet editor Perry White or scheming villain Lex Luthor. But despite his close-cropped bonce making him seemingly ideal for the latter, the team at Vulture tracked Meloni down and confirmed that he’s actually playing a general. That’s all he could say, of course, since secrecy around the film is fairly tight and no one wants a visit from Nolan wielding a cricket bat in the middle of the night.

However he ends up squeezing into the plot, Meloni will join a cast that includes Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, and Julia Ormond, who was cast a few days ago as Superman’s biological mother.

Snyder starts shooting in August and Man of Steel will arrive in December next year.
