There are many adaptations of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, and two of the most beloved are musicals (one of which also happens to have half of its characters played by Muppets). But that’s not going to stop a new, musical version of the story coming to the screen – and this latest incarnation will star the freewheeling comic talents of Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. There’s no word yet on who’s playing who – though a Ferrell-faced Scrooge, visited by a Reynolds-riffing ghost would be a fun sight to see.
Ferrell and Reynolds will also produce the film, with Daddy’s Home writers Sean Anders and John Morris on scripting duties and the latter making his directorial debut. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project attracted a bidding war that saw Apple come out on top – that’s despite Ferrell starring in and producing Eurovision for Netflix, and Reynolds starring in Michael Bay’s upcoming Netflix action movie 6 Underground.
It’s very early days on this one, so there’s no additional casting for now and no word of a release date – but it would be wise to expect a December-ish launch on the Apple TV+ streaming service in a year or two.
