Zoolander fans have waited years for the sequel to finally start picking up some traction, after hints, rumours, whispers and talk of multiple script drafts. It’s still a little bit up in the air, but Ben Stiller has been talking up the film more recently and now Christine Taylor, AKA Mrs Stiller, who played Matilda in the first film, has said she’s also going to be part of what we can only assume will be madness.
“I can tell you that I’m involved, but that’s all I can say,” Taylor tells EW. “I can tell you it’s happening, but I can’t tell you where Matilda’s at and where their relationship is at. It’s all top secret!” Matilda, of course, was the sceptical journalist who can’t stand models but is eventually won over by, marries and starts a family with Blue Steel master Derek Zoolander (Stiller).
As it stands right now, the film has Stiller back directing a script by Justin Theroux – who was to have filled the director's chair at one point, but will now be busy with HBO series The Leftovers – while Owen Wilson's Hansel and Will Ferrell’s nefarious Mugatu are rumoured to return.
Plot details are still sketchy and likely ever evolving, but Stiller told us a little of what we might expect back in 2011: “It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s basically Derek and Hansel ten years later – though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them. Will Ferrell is written into the script and he’s expressed interest in doing it.” Whether that remains the case is unknown for now. Still, hopefully we might actually see this one happen at last, and depending on the quality, a Zoolander film may enjoy more success than simply cult comedy status.
