Chris Pine might have saved the Federation in Star Trek, and he shouts a lot while trying to halt a runaway train in Unstoppable, but now it looks like he’ll have to deal with something really challenging: an angry 12-year-old. At least, that is, if he signs on for Alex Kurtzman’s directorial debut, Welcome to People.
Kurtzman wrote the script with long-time collaborator Roberto Orci and TV actor/documentary director Jody Lambert. The plot follows a man grieving over his father’s death who discovers he has an alcoholic sister he’s never met. Unusually, he decides to go and track her down without telling her who he is, and to deliver the $150,000 she’s entitled to in the will. While he’s there, he also tries to help out her bitter 12-year-old son.
It’s not just Pine who’s being linked to the movie, as Rachel McAdams and Meryl Streep are also talked about over at Production Weekly’s often-reliable Twitter feed.
It’s early days yet and no one has signed any deals, but if Kurtzman does lock them all in, it’ll mean a pretty solid cast for a first-time director. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he’s spent years writing blockbusters and working with JJ Abrams, but still…
