He went from being a larger-than-life pop cultural icon to a man plagued by scandals, so you can imagine that the life of one Terry Gene Bollea – AKA Hulk Hogan – might be a good fit for a biopic. Todd Phillips clearly thinks so, as he has Chris Hemsworth in line to star as the wrestler.
Amongst the biggest names to enter the wrestling ring, Hogan got his start in Florida's 1970s wrestling circuit. From there, he graduated to the World Wrestling Federation, becoming a household name when Vince McMahon expanded the company's appeal. Soon, Hogan was growling out of everything from movies and magazine covers to talk shows and cereal boxes, and even scored his own Saturday morning cartoon.
In more recent years, however, he's been more infamous, mired in a sex tape scandal that eventually saw him sue gossip site Gawker and get it shut down, receiving millions of dollars in a settlement.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips and writers John Pollono and Scott Silver (the latter recently working with the director on Joker) are opting to eschew the cradle-to-grave format and instead focus on Hogan's rise to fame. You might not be surprised to know that Bollea will be a consultant and executive producer on the film, so don't expect much dirt. Netflix has stepped into the negotiating ring to pick up the film, which may be Phillips' next directing project.
As for Hemsworth, he'll next be back in Avengers: Endgame, which will be out on 25 April. Eat your vitamins and say your prayers!
