When Jay and Silent Bob struck back in 2001’s Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, they were joined by a bunch of famous, geeky faces – Star Wars legends Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher among them. While it remains to be seen whether Hamill will be back as the villainous Cocknocker in the upcoming Jay And Silent Bob Reboot, writer-director-star Kevin Smith has already confirmed another major cameo for a geek icon in a Disney-owned sci-fi-fantasy franchise. In a break from playing Thor, Chris Hemsworth will be bringing the lightning to the long-awaited revival of Smith’s View Askewniverse.
Smith shared a pic with Hemsworth on Instagram, accompanied by a lengthy comment winkingly labelling the A-lister as a ‘fresh face from young Hollywood’. “I’m gonna take a chance on this up and coming charismatic kid from Australia and help him out on his star trek with a low key role in Jay And Silent Bob Reboot,” Smith writes. “He’s a killer comedic actor but I keep telling him that the real money’s in Marvel movies. In a just world, he’d get to at least screen test for them. Regardless, I’ll keep you posted on Chris’ Hollywood progress.”
Hemsworth shared his own photos of the two together, writing: “The man, the myth, the legend. The one and only @thatkevinsmith !!! Stoked to be a part of his next film Jay And Silent Bob Reboot. What a pleasure it was hanging out mate.”
This is far from Smith’s first brush with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. CAPTAIN MARVEL SPOILERS FOLLOW. Earlier this year, one of Smith’s movies made a quasi-appearance in Captain Marvel, with the Stan Lee cameo consisting of the comic book legend reading Smith’s Mallrats screenplay on a bus. Lee appeared in Smith’s second feature way back in 1995, in a slightly-more-than-just-a-cameo role, playing himself and giving lovelorn slacker Brodie some much-needed romantic advice. CAPTAIN MARVEL SPOILERS END.
Jay And Silent Bob Reboot, which wrapped just last week, will mark Smith’s first film in his New Jersey-centric universe since 2006’s Clerks II. In a conscious echo of the Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back plot, Reboot sees the titular stoner duo find out that the Bluntman and Chronic film is being rebooted, sparking another cross-country road trip to shut down production on the project. There’s no confirmed release date for the film yet, but considering Smith was editing during the shoot, here’s hoping it won’t be a long wait.
