Joseph Kosinski has seen his latest film, Top Gun: Maverick, slide back in the release schedule as the pandemic kicks various movies' slots. But even as he puts the finishing touches to the Tom Cruise-starring sequel, he's got one eye on his next project, as Chris Hemsworth, Jurnee Smollett and Miles Teller are boarding Spiderhead.
Adapted by Deadpool duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick from George Saunders' short story, Spiderhead is set in the near future, when convicts are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects in hopes of shortening their sentences. The focus is on two prisoners who become the test patients for emotion-altering drugs that force the prisoners to grapple with their pasts in a facility run by a brilliant visionary who supervises the program.
Netflix is behind the new film, and given Hemsworth's presence in Extraction, it makes sense the company would want to stay in business with him. Teller, meanwhile, plays a key role in Maverick, and Kosinski has brought him into this new project.
Spiderhead, naturally, doesn't have a date set yet, but we can expect Top Gun: Maverick on 9 July next year.
