If The Winter Soldier and Civil War taught us anything, it’s that Captain America isn’t afraid to go rogue — and neither, it seems, is Chris Evans. The actor appeared to just confirm Marvel’s plans for an unannounced Black Widow movie in a video interview while talking about the instant box office success of Black Panther.
“I’m sure it’s going to have the exact same effect when Captain Marvel comes out, when the Black Widow movie comes out,” he told ET Canada. “Marvel just has the winning recipe.” Now, we all know that Captain Marvel is confirmed — it’s shooting now, with Brie Larson playing Carol Danvers. The film is significant as the first MCU film with a solo female lead (Ant-Man and the Wasp will be the first female co-headlined Marvel Studios film). Could Evans have just been talking speculatively about Black Widow also getting her own film, or does he know something the rest of us don’t?
While Black Widow has featured prominently in the Avengers films, Iron Man 2, and especially in the later Captain America instalments, the character hasn’t had the chance to lead her own film yet. The latest word in January was that writer Jac Schaeffer had been hired to get a potential Black Widow script moving. With Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 set to massively change the landscape of the MCU, Marvel Studios has held back on confirming a schedule for Phase 4 of the mega-franchise — but it’s now looking even more likely that a Black Widow movie could be part of it.
