We saw – spoiler alert for those who didn’t – at the end of X-Men: Days Of Future Past that Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey and James Marsden’s Cyclops were restored to the timeline by Wolverine and co.’s actions in the past. But it appears that Bryan Singer is ready to exploit the 1980s setting of the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse to show younger versions of the characters, and the initial round of casting rumours has begun with the likes of Chloë Grace Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Hardy, Charlie Rowe and Timothee Chalamet in early consideration for the roles.

According to The Wrap, these are all very basic feelers being put out by 20th Century Fox and the** X-Men** team, and nothing formal has been sorted yet. Given that we’re in the casting roulette stage of Apocalypse, the roles could be played by anyone and this is simply Singer and the rest drawing up possible lists. Elle Fanning’s name has been mentioned, but there is a caution that she may not even want to be considered for the Jean Grey job.

Apocalypse finds the **First Class **team getting older and battling a new threat, the immensely powerful titular mutant who will cause no end of trouble for our heroes, particularly Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, who are said to be the focus this time.

Moretz and Steinfeld hardly need any introduction, but Chalamet should be familiar as the younger version of Matthew McConaughey’s son in Interstellar. Hardy has been playing Peter Beale on EastEnders for nearly a year and a half. As for Rowe, he’s part of the cast for US medical drama Red Band Society.
