Hapless victims as we are to the seemingly pointless chaos and anarchy of the disordered world around us, we human beings do love a chart or two. The calming force of the categorisation of all manner of things into top 10s obviously fills a deep and vital human need but the sheer volume of these collections does seem to be reaching quite ludicrous proportions. As recently as this summer we were told that Citizen Kane was the best film of all time only to have our cinematic knowledge immeasurably bettered last month by the American Film Institute's edict that Hitchcock's Pyscho was the greatest cinematic thrill anyone has ever experienced. And now the Sight and Sound boys have decided to weigh in with yet another chart, this time detailing the best ten films in the last 25 years. If you're even vaguely interested or alternatively are in dire need a comforting mainstay to order the ever increasing confusion and spiritual disarray you might be currently experiencing in this godless world of ours, the unsurprising topper of this particular chart was Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. Quelle surprise. Scorsese's whopping biopic of biffer Jake LaMotta, Raging Bull came in second with his Goodfellas placed at numero quattro. Now, we all know that the magnificent Empire polls are the only ones you should ever pay any attention to but, if you really have to have the full list, here it is: 1. Apocalypse Now 2. Raging Bull 3. Fanny and Alexander 4. GoodFellas 5. Blue Velvet 6. Do the Right Thing 7. Blade Runner 8. Chungking Express 9. Distant Voices, Still Lives 10. Once upon a Time in America & A One and a Two.
