Out of the approximately 700 Snow White-themed projects making their way through Hollywood’s development forest, it would seem as though Snow White and the Huntsman is generating the most interest. The script started a bidding war, snagged a buzzed-about director in Rupert Sanders and, just this week, started zeroing in on a cast, with Tom Hardy rumoured to play the heroic hunter. Now? It would appear the producers might be looking to Charlize Theron to bring a little evil into his world.
‘Hang on,’ we hear you say, ‘didn’t your last story also mention the fact that Angelina Jolie was top of the list for Ravenna, the evil queen who dispatches the bounty hunter to track down Snow and quit her of this mortal coil?’ And you would be correct. But while Jolie is naturally top of the wish list, her duties on her Bosnian-set directorial debut might make it impossible for her to take the role even if she was interested.
As for Theron, she had made space in her schedule to star with Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road, but since that film got delayed, both stars are more available than they thought they might be, even if Hardy has to report to shoot Batman: Hard Wayne… Sorry, The Dark Knight Rises as soon as Christopher Nolan is ready to start cranking the cameras.
But if they do both take roles, it’ll be interesting to see them work together before heading out to make Mad Max (whenever George Miller is able to get it going properly).
Either way, **Snow White and the Huntsman **promises to follow the major beats of the traditional fairy tale with a few tweaks here and there, not the least of which is the huntsman and the heroine teaming up, buddy movie-stylee, to escape from the Queen’s evil plans.
