Take a great graphic novel. Add a game Charlize Theron, once again showing she can combine acting with action. Then team her up with John Wick director David Leitch and the results are... Well, see for yourself in the Atomic Blonde trailer.
Theron has been wanting to bring this one to the screen for a couple of years, after picking up the rights to Antony Johnston and Sam Hart's graphic novel The Coldest City. With Kurt Johnstad on adaptation duty, the freshly retitled Atomic Blonde finds Theron as Agent Lorraine Broughton, a skilled intelligence operative called into action when an undercover MI6 spy is killed in 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. She has to track down a list he was smuggling to the West in order to prevent her and her colleagues becoming endangered by the release of crucial information. And the mission becomes a deadly game of double-crossing agents and global agendas.
Given Leitch's stunts and directorial past, we were expecting something fun on the fight side, but not everyone can do what Keanu Reeves does. Add Theron to that list for sure, though, exuding cool confidence and the ability to deliver the goods on the scrapping front in long takes.
With James McAvoy, John Goodman, Toby Jones and Sofia Boutella also in the cast, Atomic Blonde punches its way into UK cinemas on 11 August.
