You will likely have seen the striking first poster for the new Cold War thriller Atomic Blonde. Now the initial images from the movie, which stars Charlize Theron and James McAvoy and was directed by John Wick's David Leitch have arrived courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.
The movie was spearheaded by Theron, who picked up the rights to Antony Johnston and Sam Hart's graphic novel The Coldest City a few years ago. And now Leitch and writer Kurt Johnstad have turned the idea into a movie in which she plays Agent Lorraine Broughton, a skilled intelligence operative called into action when an undercover MI6 spy is killed in 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. She’ll have to track down a list he was smuggling to the West in order to prevent her and her colleagues becoming endangered by the release of crucial information. And the mission becomes a deadly game of double-crossing agents and global agendas.
"I hadn’t seen another character like her out there," Theron tells EW. "She doesn’t apologise for anything. We made her strong and feisty. She’s cheeky. These were
all things I responded to." And according to Leitch, the Fury Road star threw herself into the action beats. "It’s refreshing to find an actor who can do these long, long takes, memorize the choreography, maintain the character, and deliver a performance," he says. "She’s extraordinary." Strong words coming from someone who worked with Keanu Reeves... For more on the movie, head to EW's site.
Atomic Blonde will be out on 11 August.
