Charlize Theron Hits The Road

Charlize Theron has signed on to join John Hillcoat's adaptation of The Road, the chilling post-apocalyptic novel by Cormac McCarthy. She joins Viggo Mortensen in the film, who's been attached for months.

The story is basically the tale of a man and his son making their way across a burnt and wasted America, trying to find safe refuge from the bands of thieves and cannibals who also walk The Road. Theron's character would be seen "mostly" in flashback (that should be "all" in flashback unless they're messing with the story) and would have only a small role.

The Variety story also specifies that this is a post-nuclear apocalypse, which isn't made clear in McCarthy's brilliant book, so that may be a change or simply a mistake. And it's also good news to hear Viggo's name confirmed for the role - he's been talked about for ages but there were rumours that Guy Pearce might take the part instead. Still, with filming now due to begin next month, with a script from Enduring Love's Joe Penhall, there's a chance that we could see this by late this year or (more likely) early next. So can we hope that it will be as good as McCarthy's No Country For Old Men? And are you looking forward to this one?
