The no-doubt mighty spin-off Hobbs & Shaw is imminent, but Vin Diesel is keen that we all remember the core Fast & Furious franchise, of which he is the star. Making no mention of the Dwayne Johnson / Jason Statham vehicle, he's keeping everyone appraised – via his megahorn Instagram – of developments on the currently-shooting Fast & Furious 9. The latest news is that both Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren will be returning.
Both appeared in the series for the first time in Fast & Furious 8 (AKA, to some of you, The Fate Of The Furious). Theron played Cipher, the villain of the piece, who was revealed to have been the shady Blofeld-type mastermind employing Luke Evans' character in Fast & Furious 6__, who was himself running the villains of previous instalments. That's how this series rolls. We last saw her escaping from a plane by parachute, presumably living to fight our heroes another day. Or to join forces with them against someone else. That's also how this series rolls.
Mirren, meanwhile, played Evans and Statham's mother, cockney crime boss Magdalene Shaw.
So far, not much else is known about Fast & Furious 9 beyond the return of Diesel and the regulars (although not The Rock or The Stath this time, that pair being busy off on their own) and the new arrival of John Cena. Justin Lin (_Fast_s 3-6) is back to direct, and filming will take place in London, California and Thailand, having started at Leavesden last month. It'll hit cinemas in May 2020. Hobbs & Shaw, meanwhile, is out on August 1 this year.
