It’s 19 years since Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu teamed up as a super-spy trio in McG’s big-screen Charlie’s Angels – a film that gave us post-Spice Girls feminist action, Mission: Impossible-inspired mask reveals, and an all-time great Destiny’s Child power anthem. But that was nearly 20 years ago, and a new generation of Angels is gearing up to hit the big screen, this time consisting of Kristen Stewart, Aladdin’s Naomi Scott, and newcomer Ella Balinska. The first trailer has arrived, establishing the new trio – take a look here.
This new take on the classic ‘70s show comes from director Elizabeth Banks, who also appears as the new Bosley – the Angels’ guide and connection to Charlie. But the emphasis here is squarely on the new squad – Stewart as master of disguise Sabina, Balinska as deadpan Brit former MI6 agent Jane, and Scott as Elena, a client who soon finds herself drawn into the spy world. While it looks like a more grounded take on the material than McG’s cranked-up version, there’s still “wigs, toys, and clothes” that the Angels use to execute their missions – and plenty of fun interplay between the leading heroes.
Elsewhere, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before heartthrob Noah Centineo is on board, alongside Djimon Hounsou and Patrick Stewart. And as for the song? Well, Beyoncé isn’t back, but there’s a new anthem from Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey featured in the trailer. Expect a full studio cut of that in the near future.
We’ll find out whether the new trio of Angels soar on the big screen when Charlie’s Angels lands in UK cinemas on 29 November.
