Prepare your minds and your hearts — Charlie Kaufman has lined up his next film. The man who frazzled brains and stoked tear ducts with the likes of Anomalisa, Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is set to write and direct a new project for Netflix.
Kaufman’s latest work will be an adaptation of Iain Reid’s thriller novel I’m Thinking of Ending Things, where a couple’s seemingly romantic road trip — the unnamed protagonist and her boyfriend Jake are taking a trip to visit his parents for the first time — turns sour after an unexpected betrayal. The pulse-raising premise certainly sounds like a far cry from the twisting arty meta-narratives of Kaufman’s previous works like Synecdoche, New York and Adaptation, though there’s certain to be some deep cerebral and psychological themes at play.
Kaufman and Reid will co-produce the adaptation alongside Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu. There’s no release date set for the film yet, but at such an early stage in the project it’s reasonable to expect a 2019 launch on the streaming site.
