Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home has been out in cinemas for two months and made in excess of $1.7 billion, it feels safe enough to say it out loud: Charlie Cox is officially back as Daredevil, and now he’s really, properly in the MCU. And it appears Cox himself feels comfortable with the spoiler being spoiled now too, because he’s spoken to The Hollywood Reporter all about his return to the role, the moment he got the call he’d been waiting years for, and about being smuggled onto the Spidey set to keep the secret. During the conversation, Cox spoke a little about what the future might hold for him in the MCU – and while he offered no concrete details, there’s definitely a plan for Matt Murdock going forward.
While he begins by denying knowledge of where he goes next, Cox did admit: “I know a little bit – not a huge amount – but a little bit.” And since his former screen antagonist, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, was also brought officially into the MCU in the Hawkeye series, we could be heading towards another clash for the duo on screen. “I am imagining, I am hoping, that our worlds will collide again because the stuff we’ve done in the past was tremendous fun to do, and he’s such an incredible actor,” says Cox. “We have to start every conversation with, ‘What do you know?’ because you have to be careful. It’s really exciting.”
Cox said that before getting the fateful Feige phonemail, he was “pretty convinced it was over” in terms of his time playing Daredevil. Netflix cancelled the series back in 2018 after three seasons, and crossover show Defenders. How long it’ll be until we see Cox back in the suit remains to be seen – but with tons of Marvel projects on the horizon between movies and Disney+ series (including the Hawkeye spin-offEcho, possibly a natural fit for Matt Murdock’s return), there are plenty of places that the Devil Of Hell’s Kitchen could rise once more. Bring it on.
