Around the release of Suicide Squad, we heard a lot of talk about potential films focused on Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. It has taken a while, but one of them – described in Deadline's report as "an untitled girl gang film" has now taken a big leap forward, with Warner Bros. and DC picking Cathy Yan to direct it.
The film will be based on Birds Of Prey comics titles, which see Quinn teaming up with characters such as Black Canary and Batgirl, and though the studio has not confirmed the line-up, the script comes from Bumblebee's Christina Hodson, who recently signed on to write a Batgirl solo outing, so chances are she'll be introduced in this movie.
While the story cautions that Yan has yet to sign an actual deal, it's another positive step for DC, as she'll become the second female director to join the ranks after Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins. And like a few other directors – Colin Trevorrow for one – Yan comes to the job after making just one other movie, indie pic Dead Pigs, which generated heat at Sundance and scored the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting. A former journalist, she cut her teeth making short films before stepping up to her feature debut.
Other potential Quinn pics are still in the works, including Gavin O'Connor steering the Suicide Squad sequel, one featuring The Joker and Gotham City Sirens, from Squad's David Ayer.
