Director Catherine Hardwicke is the latest director headed for comics territory. But instead of opting for one of the two big players, she's sticking with the indie world, agreeing to direct an adaptation of Vault Comics title Heathen.

Natasha Alterici's title brings feminist and queer viewpoints and storylines to the Viking world, following Aydis, a fierce warrior who is scorned by her village for kissing another woman and then, after witnessing widespread injustice toward women, declares a one-woman feminist war on Odin himself. Pirates, vicious mermaids, and a cursed Valkyrie all cross paths with Aydis as she finds adventure and purpose with sword in hand.

Constantin Film And Prime Universe Films are providing the backing for the film, with Robert Kulzer, Margo Klewans, Adrian Askarieh and FJ DeSanto among the producers. Kerry Williamson wrote the script.

Before she moves to the movie, Hardwicke will finish up work on her new show for video platform Quibi, called Don't Look Deeper.
