He’s tackled immigration issues with Sin Nombre. He’s gone period drama for Jane Eyre. Never one to be tied down to a single genre, writer/director Cary Fukunaga is planning to explore the stars for his next project, signing on to Universal’s drama Spaceless.

As The Playlist reported a few days ago, the script was originally written by I, Robo****t’s Jeff Vintar, and focuses on an assassin who wakes up inside a spacesuit drifting through the void and accompanied only by a computer designed to keep him company until his air runs out and he dies.

But there are further mysteries to be solved, including what happened to him after he broke into a space station intending to carry out his latest job. He also soon discovers that reality might not be all it seems and begins to question whether he’s slowly going space crazy or whether he’s part of a complex created environment…

If it makes it through the development stage and to the screen, this one sounds like it could make for a great double bill with Duncan Jones’ Moon, especially since it deals with isolation and identity in space.

Fukunaga is planning to re-write the script before he starts calling the shots, so there’s no planned start set yet.
