January's surprising news that Jason Reitman would be directing a new Ghostbusters sequel to carry on the legacy of his father Ivan's first two movies was followed quickly by a tease and then some awkwardness where Reitman appeared to dismissing Paul Feig's female-focused 2016 reboot. Some damage control later, and ideas that the film would be bro-tastic fan service are looking much less likely with word that Carrie Coon and Stranger Things/It actor Finn Wolfhard are in talks to star.

Actual plot details of Reitman and Gil Kenan's script remain scant, but the film will be set firmly in the original Ghostbusters universe for a story set years after 1989's Ghostbusters II. Coon will play a single mother with a connection to the characters, while Wolfhard is taking the role of her son.

Reitman will be shooting the movie this summer with Sony already pencilling in a July 2020 release. Coon, who has enjoyed success on screens big and small thanks to The Leftovers and her small, performance capture role in Avengers: Infinity War as Proxima Midnight, recently worked on The Nest. Wolfhard, one of the young stars of Stranger Things, should be back as the 1990s Richie in It: Chapter 2 (6 September) while also voicing Pugsley in the new Addams Family animated film, out on 25 October.
