No, that headline is not misspelt. The Dumb & Dumber sequel is one of those projects that keep floating around the agonising limbo area just shy of actually being in production. Filmmaking brothers the Farrellys have been talking it up in recent years, while Jim Carrey has always been more reticent. But now he appears to be seriously on board with it, telling Access Hollywood that both he and Jeff Daniels are “excited” by the idea of reprising Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne.
“We’re talking about it,” he told Access. “Jeff and I are really excited about it and hopefully next year we’ll be able to do that and get it together.”
Peter and Bobby Farrelly have been trying to get them both back for ages now, and have long since plotted the new film – called, assuming this sticks despite giving our grammar-loving brains a headache, Dumb & Dumber To – which will pick up Harry and Lloyd 20 years on and no smarter whatsoever. It turns out that one of them may have sired a child and they set off to find said spawn because they need to ask the progeny for a kidney. Yeah, that’s going to end well.
Currently, they’re all trying to see if scheduling can be worked out –Daniels has Aaron Sorkin drama The Newsroom to consider, and Carrey’s got a busy film career – but it’s looking more and more likely. Just don’t start queuing up at your local fleapit yet.
Carrey will next be seen in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, which hits UK screens on Friday and which we spoke to him about here. For more from Peter Farrelly on the Dumber sequel, check out our chat with him below.
