It was all going so well for the Dumb & Dumber sequel… At least, it seemed to be. But the Farrelly brothers’ plan to return to the film that launched them onto an unsuspecting world has hit a serious roadblock as Jim Carrey has decided to drop out of starring as Lloyd Christmas.

So if you were in any way looking forward to seeing Carrey back as Lloyd alongside Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne, you’re going to be disappointed. According to Entertainment Tonight’s sources (as picked up by The Hollywood Reporter), the big sticking point was the perceived lack of studio support from Warners and New Line. "I would have thought Dumb & Dumber Two was a no-brainer, after all it's implied in the title," Carrey said in a statement.

Of course, there’s always the chance the studio could coax him back and things will return to full speed in development. After all, we're talking about the Farrellys, who waited years to get The Three Stooges on the screen. They're patient. Even if they have to recreate Carrey digitally from bits of his wacky website, they'll make this happen.

With Peter and Bobby looking to get back in the shared director’s chair, Sex Drive team Sean Anders and John Morris were on board to write the script. The big question now: will the headless parakeet squawk about more money before signing on? And how does a headless parakeet squawk about anything?
