Hands up for a quick poll: which would you find more difficult to deal with – a house full of penguins or Jim Carrey when he’s in full-on crazy mode? If you answered that they both sound like trouble, try imagining what Carla Gugino has just let herself in for, signing on to star in the new Carrey comedy Mr Popper’s Penguins.
The family-flavoured film will find Carrey as a no-nonsense businessman who, through reasons that have yet to be revealed, finds himself inheriting – and therefore responsible for – six of the feathered friends. We’re sure the movie will explain why he can’t just ship them off to the zoo, but since this is based on a beloved 1938 children’s book, logic is pretty certain to be shown the window at an early point.
So what does Carrey do with the birds? Well, again, this is a family film, so he learns important lessons about making time for your loved ones, trusting in friendship and how to vomit up a fish to feed your young. Come on – you saw March of the Penguins. You know it’s true.
Mark Waters is set to direct the movie, but what we don’t yet know is whether Gugino will be playing Carrey’s wife, girlfriend, employee, co-worker or just someone on the receiving end of a vomited fish.
And with that image rolling around in your head, enjoy your breakfast/lunch/ dinner!
