Last seen dealing with a marriage going up in flames in Wildlife, Carey Mulligan is switching things up for a new movie, making a deal to star in thriller Promising Young Woman.

Emerald Fennell, who is an executive producer and writer on the incoming second season of Killing Eve and who won the role of Camilla Parker Bowles in The Crown, is making her film directorial debut with this one, working from her script.

Mulligan will be Cassie, a young woman haunted by a tragedy in her past who begins to take a very particular form of revenge on the predatory men unlucky enough to cross her path. “Emerald generated an incredible script that rocked us to our core, so we’ve no doubt she’ll bring that same energy when directing this story,” Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski tells Deadline as his company partners up with FilmNation Entertainment to get it made. “We are thrilled to work once again with Carey along with Emerald, Glen and the entire filmmaking team on bringing this exhilarating dark tale to screen." Margot Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment company is also aboard. Fennell is aiming to start production in the spring.

As for Mulligan, she has a voice role in animated adventure A Christmas Carol, but that doesn't have a release date set yet. We're thinking... nearer Christmas?
